 We invited papers for this Conference and asked authors to address the suggested topics below. 

  • Islamic history, Islamic societies and present day mainly Muslim countries are the main focus of Istanbul Network within the values and institutions of a free society.
  • Comparative studies between historical periods, and various Muslim countries and societies will be especially welcome.
  • Emphasis should be on analysis of why free society institutions are weak in Muslim countries, and on suggestions about how these can be strengthened.

Suggested Topics

  • Liberalism, secularism and liberal democracy in present day Muslim societies and history
  • Comparative studies, indigenous models and cultural attitudes in mainly Muslim countries.
  • Individual in Muslim scriptures, societies, culture, history
  • Social and political pluralism and tolerance in scriptures and society
  • Public and private spheres in Muslim societies
  • State and community in Islam: Rights, responsibilities and obligations vis a vis individuals
  • The challenges to liberal reform in the Arab Spring
  • The role of Islamic civil society institutions in bringing about and sustaining a free society
